In early America indentured servants were popular but the use of indentured service sill use anywhere at the start of the Civil War? I know that South America was using indentured servants from Asia up to the Civil War and that California and some areas of the Southern U.S. prior to the Civil War. One problem with indentured servants was that after a certain amount of time the contracted ended. In parts of South America it was fairly common for the masters of indentured servants to extend, without permission or additional money, the number of years they could hold the indentured servant.
