Yesterday, Mike graciously made me the Host of the "Post Civil War History, The Reconstruction Period." This is not a new forum, but I am new to hosting it. I want to encourage folks to post here.

This forum has a two part name "Post Civil War History" and "The Reconstruction Period." Post Civil War could be forever after April 1865 and Reconstruction is generally described by modern historians as beginning before the war ended. Because it is such a broad area, I encourage posts on many topics. These might include:

    -Veterans organizations and affairs
-The elections of 1868, 1872, and 1876 and other Congressional and state elections
-The experiences of freed slaves as refugees
    -The Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, 15th)
-Efforts by partisans of all sides in the conflict to craft narratives of the war that furthered their agendas
    -The Freedman's Bureau
-The administrations of Johnson and Grant
    -The great impeachment trial
    -The post-war military establishment
    -The post-war experience of occupation/liberation
-Political violence and terrorism during Reconstruction
-Establishment of monuments and NPS facilities to interpret Reconstruction

Let's discuss what else you would want to see in the forum.

To post in this forum, click on the Forums tab. You will see "The Napsack" an then "Long and Dusty Road". Then just click "Post Civil War History, The Reconstruction Period."

I hope this forum becomes something more than a dusty side room, up in the attic through the secret door. I am glad you are working on it.

This may be a useful link as it is for the newspaper "National Tribune".this publication was for members of the GAR, and it was designed to help them with their pensions but it evolved into a lot more.a lot of first hand civil war experiences and much more.

You must bring back the Reconstruction Timeline, so that it is easy to find. I have now placed it on favourites, but there are others who may have missed it. It is a fantastic starting point for someone new to Reconstruction, or have been mired in it for months...

I do not know where to tell you to start as it is so vast in size.the early issues should give you a good start as a large part is devoted to getting pensions.
