Was Pope really commander?

I had a question about General Pope. My eighth grade history teacher was talking about the Second Manassas battle, and stated that McCllelan was commanding the Union army at the battle. When I told him that I thought General Pope was the commander of the army, he told me that he was never really the official commander. Was this true?

McClellan was in command of The Army of the Potomac which had little involvement in 2nd Manassas. Pope was in command of The Army of Virginia which Lincoln created out of frustration with McClellan's inaction and abandonment of the Peninsula.

So your teacher was right in holding that Pope was not in command of the major federal army (AotP, but he was in command of the army that fought at Manassas II.
