I thought he died 6 days after the war ended.

President Lincoln died on April 15, 1865. Six days after the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Not six days after the war ended.

Beat me to it! Lee's surrender marked the end of whatever prospect the Confederates still had of prevailing, but neither the government nor any other armies had yet given up.

As for the question, in those six days, did Lincoln say or do anything that could be construed as honoring Confederate dead?
