During his post as commander of Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati, he supervised the raising of the equivalent of at least 23 regiments for the Union.
More than 50,000 Union soldiers were mustered through Camp Dennison sometimes as many as 12,000 at any time. In 1863 it was troops from this Camp that responded to Confederate Cavalry from Gen. Morgan's raid.
