I've read 1-4 and 7. All are good. I liked Slotkin's book the best because it had analysis that was new to me. I am not sure if that is a good enough reason to recommend it. I wonder why the Carman book, which is broken into two volumes in the nominated edition, only has the second part up for the award. I realize that the first volume ends as the armies are arriving on the battlefield, but it is really a single, if very long work.

only one book can be recommended, "sets" don't count as one book
