    Some receipts from this era attempted to give medicinal advice. Many dangerous, and in some cases, deadly, "cures" were given, reflecting the primitive knowledge of that time period. Condiments To make Vinegar

(from Confederate Receipt Book. A Compilation of over One Hundred Receipts, Adapted to the Times, published by West & Johnson, 1863)

Ingredients:
one pint of molasses​
one gallon of warm water​
Instructions:
Take one pint of molasses, put it in a jug with one gallon of warm water, not boiling, let it stand for two months, and you will have good vinegar.​

Ingredients:
eight gallons of clear rain water​
three quarts of molasses​
two or three spoonfuls of good yeast
a sheet of brown paper​
Instructions:
To eight gallons of clear rain water add three quarts of molasses, put into a good cask, shake well a few times, then add two or three spoonfuls of good yeast. If in summer place the cask in the sun; if in winter near the chimney, where it may be warm. In ten or fifteen days add to the liquid a sheet of brown paper, torn in strips, dipped into molasses, and good vinegar will be produced.​
