It's hard to fathom what a pile of rubble and brick dust Sumter had been reduced to over the course of the war -- but yet it held out until the final evacuation.

Its resilience helps to explain why Major Anderson and his little garrison were such a burr under the fire-eaters' saddle in 1861.
