Thanks, @JerseyBart ! Maybe I'll manage to join in on that discussion - though most likely as a silent listener/reader only. But I can't make any promises as to my attendance; it'll be 3 a.m. in Germany when you start.

Yes, that's why I cannot participate also. But usually @ami posts a transcript of what was going on and I'm appreciating that a great deal and love to read it. Almost as if you had been there yourself.
Have a lively discussion, you lucky ones who will be able to join, and I'm sure to read great thoughts in the subsequent transcript!

Good to know there'll be a transcript, thank you! Right now, since I'm on vacation next week, I'm deviating from my daily schedule and "practicing" going to bed late and sleeping in longer so that I can join in. If not - or if I fall asleep - I can at least read up what I missed.

I would be interested, however I would have to read the transcript

I would like to be notified however I may have to read the transcript or watch the video later as I have to rise at 4:00 am to go to work.

While I did stop in today, I'm not going to be able to attend tomorrow night. I'm working on a zoning appeal (three-story apartment 20 feet from my back lot line, aargh--I'm supposed to be grateful that it's 20 feet instead of 10) and that has priority. Written comments are due online at 6 pm (PDT) and I'll probably collapse afterwards.

I strongly recommend Eric Wittenberg, et al, One Continuous Fight, for lots more info about the retreat from Gettysburg.

BTW, I didn't get the alert, although all the "alert" options are checked on my profile.

Oct 1, 2018 at 9:02 PM - JerseyBart: Let’s do it. Not much ground breaking info but an interesting talj
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:02 PM - JerseyBart: Talk
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:03 PM - War Horse: Well, this is in my wheelhouse. What do you find interesting or not about the subject?
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:03 PM - Dom71: yes he seemed to kind of give the bullet points but this part of the campagne is always interesting
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:04 PM - JerseyBart: Raised my eyebrows calling Gettysburg the turning point of the war
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:04 PM - Dom71: yeah na
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:04 PM - JerseyBart: Gotta toe the company line Id assume
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:05 PM - War Horse: It combined with Vicksburg was, in my opinion. Talk about about a double blow.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:05 PM - Dom71: Meade still aking some heat for the gettaway
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:06 PM - JerseyBart: True but no mention of Vicksburg. Thee turning point.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:06 PM - War Horse: Not deserved, I can assure you
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:06 PM - Dom71: no not mentioned so much more important situation Vicksburg
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:06 PM - JerseyBart: He came back twice with Meade being behind in his pursuit but at least gave reasons
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:06 PM - Dom71: I agree War Horse
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:07 PM - JerseyBart: Not at guelzo attack on meade
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:08 PM - Dom71: I cannot imagine an assault on those defenses would have produced anything but dead Union soldiers
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:08 PM - War Horse: The control of the Mississippi not mentioned but totally relevant I'd say. However I agree for this discussion. Sorry JB.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:09 PM - JerseyBart: Agreed. Neither Lincoln nor guelzo were there to see the exhaustion and tatters meade saw.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:09 PM - Dom71: Guelzo puzzles me with his position, I don't understand the dislike there
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:11 PM - War Horse: Imagine the passes, could two armies have traversed the same passes under the current rain situation?
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:12 PM - JerseyBart: With miles and miles or injured in wagons. Horrendous.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:12 PM - Dom71: I cant imagine what that must have looked like. thousands of soldiers wagons artillery tramping the same muddy roads
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:13 PM - Dom71: I cant imagine what that must have looked like. thousands of soldiers wagons artillery all on the same muddy roads
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:13 PM - Dom71: oops i had a delay lol
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:13 PM - War Horse: Meade took the route that was available to him. Lee, did an excellent job of covering his armies retreat. Using the weather and terrine to his advantage.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:15 PM - Dom71: I was looking at maps the other night, trying to see if it were possible for meade to cross the potpmac further south to get in behind him
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:15 PM - Dom71: but i figured he had thought of that lol
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:15 PM - War Horse: You know the route that Meade took is now National route 40. The national highway.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:15 PM - JerseyBart: War Horse did rebel soldiers throw dead union soldiers in the town’s wells as they retreated?
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:16 PM - War Horse: I've not read that JB.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:17 PM - JerseyBart: I thought I read or read that somewhere. I just cannot remember where.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:18 PM - JerseyBart: Possibly one of my retreat or aftermath in toen
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:18 PM - JerseyBart: Town books.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:19 PM - War Horse: There was a Union drummer boy who reportedly cut the lines that were attached to the only union bridge that was the only viable escape route for Lee, it's a very interesting story. I wish I could remember it now.Sadly, I'd have to look it up.
Oct 1, 2018 at 9:20 PM - Dom71: didnt he have his engineers build a new one while they waited for an attack?
