Harry Vertz (1890 - 1972); married Ella Demmin in 1923, Ella is the elder sister of my great-great-grandmother, Martha Ida Demmin (1905 - 1988), who married Celia (Vertz) DeFere and Peter DeFere’s eldest child, Peter III, born in 1899. Harry was a Private in Co. H, 28th Infantry Regiment, WWI.

Occupation before War:
1847 - 1861: Farmer; worked for Antoine DeFer from emigration until they moved to Stiles, Wisconsin in 1858, then he worked as a farm hand for his father, Jacob Vertz.
Civil War Career:
1861: Enlisted in Stiles, Wisconsin on May 29 in the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Co. H.
Mustered into federal service on July 2nd
1861: Moved to Baltimore, MD on July 15-22
1862: Attached to Dix’s Division, Baltimore, MD
1862: Participated in the Battles of Fort Jackson and Saint Phillip, Rebel forces failed to stop Union naval ships.
1862: Participated in the New Orleans Expedition with his company and regiment.
Captured his fathers regiment, Chalmette Regiment, in the expedition and famously gave him a handshake before he was sent to prison.
1863: Participated in the Battle of Fort Bisland, wounded by minor shrapnel in the skirmish. Later was present at the Battle of Port Hudson with his company.
1863: Regiment is transferred to a Cavalry Brigade in July, regiment designation changed to 4th Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry on August 22, 1863.
1864: Company was sent to Baton Rouge, LA as a detachment under Colonel Frederick A. Boardman. Boardman was later killed in action at a skirmish in Comite River, LA.
1864: Charles was subject to a Court Martial in Baton Rouge, LA in March, 1864. Charles was convicted but given a lesser punishment of rail duty until December, 1864. Charles was convicted on July 14, 1864 and was then dropped off muster rolls and rosters.
1865: Charles reenlists for a one year commitment in Company H, of the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on January 16, 1865, about a month after his sentence ended.
1866: On January 16, Charles was discharged from the Army in Brownsville, TX after his commitment and returned back home to Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin.

Farmer (1865 - 1922); Charles was a career farmer and worked until his death
