Graffiti scrawled on Confederate statue at Lake Eola Park

Someone scrawled “USA” on the base of the Confederate memorial at Lake Eola Park, prompting a graffiti complaint to Orlando Police this weekend amid the ongoing controversy concerning the statue’s fate.

The incident was reported to Orlando Police about 3 p.m. Sunday by Larry Rowe, a member of the Florida division of the national Sons of Confederate Veterans organization.

NEW ORLEANS — Just days after the last of four Confederate monuments slated for removal came down in New Orleans, an apparent anarchist group that calls itself the Real Meow Meow Liberation Front – Professional Party Planning Committee has vandalized another monument that pays tribute to a Confederate poet and priest.

The monument at Banks Street and Jefferson Davis Parkway honors Father Abram J. Ryan, a poet and priest of the Confederacy.

Just another example of how it will never be enough for some people, and they are as ignorant as they are destructive. In honour of Father Abram J Ryan, his poetry and his magnanimity, this is my small act of defiance...

"The Conquered Banner

By Abram Joseph Ryan

FURL that Banner, for ’t is weary;
Round its staff ’t is drooping dreary:
Furl it, fold it,—it is best;
For there ’s not a man to wave it,
And there ’s not a sword to save it, 5
And there ’s not one left to lave it
In the blood which heroes gave it,
And its foes now scorn and brave it:
Furl it, hide it,—let it rest!

Take that Banner down! ’t is tattered; 10
Broken is its staff and shattered;
And the valiant hosts are scattered,
Over whom it floated high.
Oh, ’t is hard for us to fold it,
Hard to think there ’s none to hold it, 15
Hard that those who once unrolled it
Now must furl it with a sigh!

Furl that Banner—furl it sadly!
Once ten thousands hailed it gladly,
And ten thousands wildly, madly, 20
Swore it should forever wave;
Swore that foeman’s sword should never
Hearts like theirs entwined dissever,
Till that flag should float forever
O’er their freedom or their grave! 25

Furl it! for the hands that grasped it,
And the hearts that fondly clasped it,
Cold and dead are lying low;
And that Banner—it is trailing,
While around it sounds the wailing 30
Of its people in their woe.

For, though conquered, they adore it,—
Love the cold, dead hands that bore it,
Weep for those who fell before it,
Pardon those who trailed and tore it; 35
And oh, wildly they deplore it,
Now to furl and fold it so!

Furl that Banner! True, ’t is gory,
Yet ’t is wreathed around with glory,
And ’t will live in song and story 40
Though its folds are in the dust!
For its fame on brightest pages,
Penned by poets and by sages,
Shall go sounding down the ages—
Furl its folds though now we must. 45

Furl that Banner, softly, slowly!
Treat it gently—it is holy,
For it droops above the dead.
Touch it not—unfold it never;
Let it droop there, furled forever,— 50
For its people’s hopes are fled!"

Confederate monument in St. Louis vandalized again

By Associated Press May 30 at 9:58 AM
ST. LOUIS — For the second time in a week, the Confederate monument in St. Louis’ Forest Park has been targeted.

KMOV-TV (http://bit.ly/2qxfYng ) reports that “Black Lives Matter” and “End Racism” were four spray-painted on the 103-year-old granite monument early Saturday. Graphic language had been painted on the monument following protests and counter-protests on May 23.

The Union isn't immune either. General Sheridan has been vandalized. It's from mid October, but I did not see it here.

It seems like it is spreading.
Actually, no, it seems like it's receding. Monument Mania is being replaced by inappropriate behavior in the workplace as the latest Bogey Man.

This is a good thing, insofar as it actually addresses conditions of the living and not the long dead, but that's just my opinion.

Activists damage war monument where 58 dead NC soldiers were thrown into well

By Mark Price

March 06, 2018 11:56 AM

A North Carolina Civil War monument at Maryland’s South Mountain State Battlefield was vandalized over the weekend.

The Friends of South Mountain Battlefield posted images of the damage on Facebook early Tuesday and said several acts of vandalism were reported at the site over the past two weekends. South Mountain Battlefield is on the National Register of Historic Places and is infamous as the battle where 58 dead Confederates from North Carolina were dumped down a well after the fighting ended. The site is about 15 miles southeast of Hagerstown, Maryland.

Vandals sprayed red and white paint on the monument of a dying soldier, which honors North Carolinians who fought at or near the battle on Sept. 14, 1862. A symbol of an “A” inside a circle has led many to believe the damage was caused by members of the Antifa movement, which is a conglomeration of anti-fascist groups in the United States. Its members have also taken a stand against Confederate monuments, calling them discriminatory.

The damage, which Charlotte-area Civil War historian Rex Hovey said is believed to have occurred Saturday night, included spray paint on the Garland Headstone, which was put up in memory of Brig. Gen. Samuel Garland, who died at the battle. “I was just heart broken,” said Hovey, who is also a Civil War reenactor.

The vandalism comes at a time when some groups are demanding that Confederate monuments be removed from public grounds in cities and moved to historic battlefields and cemeteries. Among the battles is an ongoing tug-of-war over the Silent Sam monument to war dead on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Images of the spray-painted Maryland monument were posted on Facebook and have been shared more than 1,000 times in the past day. Commenters have largely condemned the damage as the work of people who chose to ignore the site’s role in depicting the brutality of war for both sides.

“Destroying American soldiers monuments? Whether they’re Union or Confederate doesn't matter,” posted
Jim Anchor on Facebook. “They’re still American soldiers.”

“I’m sure the vandals know nothing of the history of the South Mountain battlefield,” posted
George Berg on Facebook. “Just shameful behavior.”

The damage was discovered by the Central Maryland Heritage League, Hovey said, and its members are working to clean the spray paint away.

South Mountain was the first major Civil War battle to take place in Maryland, and a critical turning point in the Civil War. Union victories at South Mountain and Antietam (fought three days later) led President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

I drove my little sister to the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday to visit my grandfather and uncle's gravesites. After we finished paying our respect, I showed her the cemetery's American Civil War sites (Hooker, Lytle, Cox.....). We stopped by the 5th OVI monument and observed vandalism (theft). Some jackwipe removed the front badge plate. Thank God they didn't remove the rear badge plate. When will this stop? Insanity!!!

SCV reward grows to $10,000 for vandalized confederate statue

A reward initially posted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans for information on who vandalized a Confederate monument in Georgia has grown to $10,000.

Sylvania police Chief Shane Burke told The Statesborough Herald, that the investigation remains ongoing following the incident which occurred on Aug. 31 at the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the local department in identifying the individuals responsible.

The statue was erected in 1909 by wives and daughters of Confederate soldiers and then moved from a city park in the 1950s. The space where it previously stood was made into a parking lot.

Members of the local SCV chapter, the Black Creek Volunteers Camp 549, called the statue “priceless,” because the monument was purchased by survivors of the Civil War soldiers who died in battle.

The reward has grown from an initial $2,000 posted by the SCV has grown from private donations made by citizens.

Adam Bazemore, the SCV camp commander, said the local grassroots effort saw donations between $100 and $500.

As I've said before park services should stop spending money on any new projects till they can demonstrate they can protect what we already have, no need to just give em new targets........

They had in the news awhile back about a plaque shot up on the end of a gravel road....Couldn't but help but think if we cant protect 20 ft statues in the middle of a city park, putting markers up in the middle of nowhere probably is folly......

Never mind Xbox, I didn’t want to shovel snow because I was reading books. On the Rebellion. And nowadays if you want your driveway cleaned it’s easy to flag down a guy cruising around in a pickup with a plow. Give him a double sawbuck and bang, done in two minutes.

Not too many pickups roaming around in cul-de-sac developments where most of these kind of kids live with short driveways. Not worth them burning up the gas. BTW-Pick up trucks don't do sidewalks.

The graffiti shown is done by gang members. This is not the only thing they are going to tag. They are going to tag anything they don't agree with or think (in their minds) that it is theirs.

Confederate statue vandalized with message to help homeless
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Confederate statue in Kentucky has once again been vandalized, this time with a message to house the homeless and remove borders.

News outlets report the messages appeared on the Louisville statute Wednesday. The statue depicts John B. Castleman, a Confederate soldier and general who helped to create the city’s park system. He also founded the American Saddlebred Horse Association.
