The 56th New York was a fairly unique unit in that it was recruited as a legion rather than just an infantry regiment. The "10th Legion" consisted of 10 infantry companies, 1 sharpshooter company, 2 troops of cavalry, and 2 batteries of artillery. The batteries were redesignated as the 7th and 8th New York Batteries and the cavalry troops were transferred to the 1st New York Mounted Rifles.
