Here awhile back I got more wood from a friend in Jackson who was there when the USS Cairo was raised. This white oak was black from being submerged in the Yazoo for a 100 years, it had started to petrify and was very hard to work with. Doc Gary did a great job as usual and even made me a magnifying glass of which there is only one for my birthday present. These came of fantastic and there is one in the group that will be the one that will be raffled off at out upcoming CWT Invades Vicksburg gathering. The one with the white oak plug had an original square nail hole but the wood was so hard it kept chipping so he had to put the plug in to keep it intact.

That was worth another trip around the sun.

Cutting this wood was very difficult according to Doc Gary and he is working on a pen with a square nail that was still in the lower piece of wood, so will will see how that works out. They are still very unique.

Doc. Gary is a true artist and his passion for making CW witness pens is a labor of love for him. The one below is the one that will be raffled off at our upcoming get together in Vicksburg.
