I purchased the box plate today at an antique store for nearly nothing. It looks authentic to me. I purchased the book on Sherman from Ebay for five dollars!

Wow!
The book looks great. The plate looks good, heck even repro plates go for 15 or so nowadays.

I think its the rust colored areas, using brillo pads on old metal leaves the metal the same odd rust color with uneven colored areas. Found that many years ago bottle collecting.

Correct on the brillo pads, and more evident..the "burn" markings and the way it is completely glazed. Plus anytime the hooks/loops (depending on which arsenal made the plate) are missing it immediately raises a flag bc you can often tell an original from a repro based on how they are attatched to the back of the plate.
No harm no foul though..at least you didn't shell out hundreds or even thousands on a repro CS plate that many have and continue to make the mistake of doing.
I suggest Steve Mullinax's plate book..it's amazing and THE go to guide
