Why did it take almost 150 years to design a cotton picker or harvester that worked ? Technology was applied to every aspect of cotton production, especially using steam, so why not a harvester. Although there were technological hurtles the ultimate solution was very simple. The first harvester was patented in 1833 I think but a real working machine did not come along until 1930. They figured out how to harness steam but couldn’t figure out wet , smooth spindles on a cotton picker ?
was this all a way to entrap and tie former slaves to the land , keep them out of the north, and maintain a system similar to slavery for a longer period than actual post cotton gin slave produced cotton (1800 to 1865) ?
