Union Soldier James Ratliff Co's I & D 8th Tn.Cav. ended the war a 1st Lt

James was a East Tennessee " home-grown Yank " during the Civil War. His brother Robert died of disease while in the Confederate Army's 60th Tn Inf. His half-brother,Silas Jr. was also a Union soldier in the 3rd Tn Mtd Inf. James enrolled as a Private Sept.15,1863 at Jonesboro,Tn. He mustered at Mossy Creek Nov.14,1863. He was 22. Described as 5'9" fair complexion, grey eyes, light hair. A farmer born in Scott Co.Va. Promoted to Corporal Dec.30,1863. Roll dated Feb.19,1864 says he was hospitalized at Knoxville thru April 64. Promoted to Sergt March 19,1865. Discharged as a 1st Lieut July 26,1865 at Knoxville. James sister, Sarah Jane married Union veteran ( and former Confederate ) Jackson Simmons. Their daughter,Mary was my maternal gr,grandmother married to Melvin " Bud " Cox. James is
