Forgive me if this is the wrong place to put this...

My mom sent me this link the other day and I just got around to reading it. I am curious what you think on it?

He's absolutely right that much of what you hear about the Underground Railroad is myth and exaggeration. Unfortunately, he overcompensates by exaggerating in the opposite direction.

My problem is I need to know who is saying what about the Underground Railroad and all I see just assertions.

The apparently defunct Textbook League had a reputation for earnestly policing the adherence to facts of textbooks, but for sometimes going over the top a bit. Mother Jones had an article on the group a few years ago:

Yes, I noticed that he just asserted and didn't really give any solid examples/sources to support himself.

Yes, and some of his assertions are demonstrably (and ridiculously) false, like "To the extent that the Underground Railroad had any practical importance, it acquired its significance after the adoption of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850". Whoa buddy!! There is a ton of corroborated, verifiable, primary source documentation about a viable and significant Underground Railroad well prior to 1850. In fact that's the whole reason the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 was written in the first place! It's like saying that polio wasn't of practical importance until the polio vaccine was invented.

If your interest is in Tubman, the Combahee Raid might be of interest.

From what I have read about her, she well deserved being honored on the bill.

The National Park Service is currently engaged in mapping Underground Railroad routes and safe houses. They have a level of evidence that excludes a lot of local legends, but I'll be interested in the final product.

Kate Clifford Larson wrote a story in yesterday's Washington Post on Tubman myths. It's here for those interested.

It's locked because I reported myself to moderators. I didn't realize this thread was already here.

It's a positive article on Tubman, relax.
