If you had asked Grant why he wore a private's blouse, his answer would have been simple: why should I present the rebel sharpshooters with two lines of buttons to aim at? Given the extraordinary casualty rates suffered by officers on both sides, that was simply common sense.

He had a similar answer for the question of why he usually had only a single aide ride with him when he looked over the army and the area they were moving through. The point was to see what the enemy was doing, not conduct a parade to draw their attention.
