Thanks I had forgotten about that one. I didn't much like the show but liked that episode.
I saw the owl creek episode about 25 yrs ago; i had a Hollywood producer's asst track down a cartridge video of the TZ episode. It made me an Ambrose Bierce fan ever since. : )There were 2 or 3 Twilight Zone episodes that featured Confederate soldiers.
Passersby — a wife waiting for the return of her Confederate husband, presumably at the end of the war, watches a steady stream of Confederates passing by from her front porch, all destined for the same unidentifiable place. Near the end of the line is Lincoln, thus suggesting everyone is dead, including the wife.
Still Valley — a wizard or magician tries to win the war for the Confederacy through a spell that freezes Union soldiers.
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge — wonderful sci fi short story by Ambrose Bierce with a surprise/shocking ending. Main character is a Confederate saboteur/bushwhacked/spy. Trivia: this was the only Twilight Zone episode that was not original to TZ. It was licensed from a French short subject film and limitations on the license prevented it from being re-broadcast or included in any home media set for many decades. Only in the past few years has it been available and Sci Fi Channel regularly airs it now.
There were several Bonanza episodes that touched on the war. In "A House Divided" - Little Joe and Adam squared off on different sides. The series backstory had the sons being half siblings with Joes mother from New Orleans. In two episodes I recall he 'leaned' Confederate but never enlisted. Adam 'leaned' Union but never joined either...Someone mentioned how the Bonanza boys never served during the war....

The "stereotyping" might ring more true today than it would have back then.Note that all these ex-confederates seem to be quite conspicuously "good guys" ... often the hero of the story.
So much for the media stereotyping them as villains!
I remember that episode, watched it several times was a Fan of T Z in my younger days.
thx for posting the video. haven't seen it in >25 yrs, when I first saw it. Somehow, I missed it during its first run ca 1962 on TZ. it brought me to tears yet again! it's a masterpiece, both the story by Bierce and this production, which I believe was actually made in France, and run on TZ as one of the very few outside episodes run by TZ?I remember that episode, watched it several times was a Fan of T Z in my younger days.

Yes, and the former pows that kidnapped him were confederatesThe rifleman fought for the Uion.
Bret Maverick was a galvanized Yankee.James Garner revived his role as Bret Maverick in the TV series "Bret Maverick" in 1981. Not only was he an ex Confederate but there was one episode featuring the Rattlesnake brigade made up up ex confederate soldiers.
As a kid always thought it was, "half gun will travel" which made no since to me...It seems like I read somewhere that Paladin (Have Gun Will Travel) was a Union Veteran and West Pointer. Can't recall where I read that. Richard Boone as Paladin - absolutely my favorite TV western character.
Flint McCullough the original scout, played by Robert Horton, was an ex-Confederate.On Wagon train, Major Seth Adams, Charlie Wooster and Bill Hawks all fought for the Union in the same regiment...
