Game #50 - Week 1

Happy New Year!!! Yea!

Time to start a new game, a great time for new players to join in the fun! Ha!

Here are the questions for Week 1:

1. This Mexican War veteran died a little over three years after the end of the Civil War. Best known as an explorer, trapper, guide, and Indian fighter, he was brevetted Brigadier General “for gallantry” in a February, 1862 Trans-Mississippi battle which was a Confederate victory. Name him.

2. This relative of former president Zachary Taylor was also an Indian Chief. As a colonel, he commanded the last Confederate unit to surrender in his native state. Name him.

3. In this March 1863 battle, 3500 Confederates serving under a notorious cavalry raider attacked a 1300 strong Federal force. In this six hour battle, the Confederate troops, fighting dismounted, encircled the Union position, but were held off, suffering over 10% casualties. Name the battle.

4. During the war, this horticulturist became the White House gardener and steward. Name him.

5. The name of this his Virginia geological feature, which was a result of “stream piracy”, may provoke a ‘stifled laugh’ or appeal to your sweet tooth. It was the site of several comings and goings of the armies throughout the war. Name it.

question on question three

Sam on question 3. it says the Confederates were held off. Does this mean they lost the battle. Everything else fits a certain battle where the Confederates were replused three times but eventually did win the day capturing the Union troops

The National Park Service description calls it a "Union victory".

Spelling correction

Question 4 contains a spelling anomaly. For what it's worth:

4. During the war, this horticulturist became the White House gardener and steward. Name him.

Could also read:

4. During the war, this horticulturalist became the White House gardener and steward. Name him.

I don't know that there is any difference other than the spelling.

I should not have used such a big word. Florist would do.
