Welcome to our newest player, Ole. Glad you decided to join us.

Looks like everybody came back from their holiday furlough loaded and ready for action. Everyone who played this week got all five questions right. Bully for all of you!

Here are the official answers to the questions for Week 1 (not that any of you really needed me to tell you).

1. Since Kentucky never joined the Confederacy and Confederate forces were driven from it in 1862. the 1st Kentucky became known as the Orphan Brigade.

2. In an attempt for redemption following the Union disaster at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside ordered the Army of the Potomac to begin an advance designed to outflank the Army of Northern Virginia. A severe winter rainstorm caused the Union troops to become hopelessly bogged down in the mud, so the campaign failed.

3. The weapon was designed by Christopher Spencer of Connecticut, who received a patent for the breechloader in 1860. By 1864, the Spencer carbine was routinely issued to Union cavalry forces.

4. John Pope was named to command the Federal Army of Virginia on June 26, 1862. He remained in command of that army for only 69 days, just long enough to preside over the debacle at 2nd Bull Run (2nd Manassas)

5. Carnot Posey of Mississippi, a veteran of Antietam (Sharpsburg), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, died as a result of Federal artillery fire at Bristoe Station.
