Since I will be on the road most of tomorrow and Sunday, I’ll post the questions for Week 2 now.

6. The central figure in the Great Seal of the Confederacy is a depiction of a man on horseback. Who is the man supposed to be?

7. When the eleven Confederate states seceded, all but one of their U.S. Senators resigned their offices. Who was the only one to remain in the Senate?

8. Though St. Louis, MO was largely pro-Southern, there was a significant German population there that remained loyal to the Union. Some of the Germans formed a pro-Union volunteer military unit. What did pro-Southern St. Louisans call these German volunteers?

9. At the Battle of Gaines’ Mill, D.H. Hill’s assault on the Union right was repulsed by troops led by Hill’s old West Point roommate. Who was Hill’s roommate?

10. (Two point question) What governor of Pennsylvania received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the first Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)?

Those who have not yet responded to the questions for Week 1 may still do so until 6 PM EDT on Sunday, May 28.

Although I’m giving everybody an extra day, if they need it, to answer the questions for Week 1, we will go back to the normal schedule for Week 2. Answers to the questions for Week 2 will by due by 6 PM EDT on Saturday, June 3.

We had a variety of answers for question # 8, several of which failed to make it past CWT’s ever-vigilant automatic censor. Those of you who can cite sources for your answers are welcome to enter an appeal, according to the rules (but maybe you should try the German “verdammt” instead of the English word that keeps getting blotted out). Could be a big week for appeals.

Robert B., I have no more idea about CindyScoops than you do. The last time she played was December 17. I sent a private message to her some time ago inviting her to return, but she has not responded.

Pending appeals, Robert B. Condon has taken over first place in the First Division and Sarladaise is in first place in the Second Division, both with perfect scores of 12 points.

Here are the answers to the questions for Week 2:

6. The figure on horseback is meant to represent George Washington.
7. The one who remained in the Senate was Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, who would become the 17th President.
8. My source says the pro-Southern St. Louisans referred to the German volunteers as “Hessians,” reminiscent of the German mercenaries who fought on the British side in the 18th-century American Revolution.
9. George Sykes was Hill’s old roommate.
10. John F. Hartranft, whose statue stands at the southwest corner of the Pennsylvania Capitol today, was the Pennsylvania governor who won the Medal of Honor for his actions at First Bull Run.

Scores at the end of Week 2:

FIRST DIVISION

Robert B. Condon 12
SamGrant 11
Aggie80 4

SECOND DIVISION

Sarladaise 12
bgl1952 11
Texaswildcat 11
Traveller 10
Rad2duhbone53 9
RivrRat 6
IrishBrigadeLadd 3
Miss Markie 3

An Appeal?

I PM'ed Cindy Scopes a few months ago as I also missed her input. She said something about not wanting to do public postings anymore ... ?

I don't know German so am not familiar with the 'D' words and I doubt the secessionists knew either when then used their derisive calls.

(Does this mean any possible answer to a trivia question must pass the censors to be counted as correct?)!!!

Anyway, I'll admit that I found multiple derisive terms by with the pro-Southerners refereed to the German unionist volunteers, of which there were not one, but several different regiments.

While they (the pro-Southerers) may have referred to one specific regiment as 'Hessians', I don't know, but the question did not specify any partiular unit; from my research I found that in general these units were referred to by several derogatory names, among them '**** Dutch' or '****ed Dutch' or 'Hessians' or 'Dutch' or others.

I found the 'D... Dutch' more frequently than any other term.

Here are some links, search on 'dutch' or one of those 'd..n' words:

It would be interesting to know if it could be proved that these German volunteer units were only reffered to as 'Hessians' and never as 'D.. Dutch.

Oh well.

SamGrant has more than adequately supported his response.

Texaswildcat sent me a PM to inform me that, in the book "The Civil War, Early Battles in the West," it is stated on page 15 that "the Home Guards were almost all German immigrants, known as "die Schwartze Garde" to their friends and as "****ed Dutchmen" to their enemies."

They will both get credit for their answers and are now tied for the lead in the First and Second Divisions, respectively, with 12 points apiece.

Incidentally, I have no rule requiring that an answer must be acceptable to the automatic censor, since it's pretty tough to figure out what the censor will find objectionable. If the censor ***'s out your answer, I'll just try my best to figure out what you meant.

I've seen automatic censors that were even more sensitive than the one here at CWT. There was a time when the automatic censor on Major League Baseball's message boards automatically ***'d out any word beginning with the letters "sh" followed by the letter "t," regardless of what letter or letters appeared in between. Made it pretty difficult to talk about the guy playing the position between second and third.

so if the shortstop ruined the shutout with a shot to short center, shattering the team record for the Shattuckville (MA) Shetlands....?

Well guess we would be s*** out of luck!
