The Trans-AlleghenyLunatic Asylum opened in 1864 in Weston West Virginia. From the start it seemed destined to become haunted. People, including children, could be institionalized for, vague reasons. Such as laziness, reading novels, or being religiously over excited.

Treatment included, electronic shock therapy, submersion in freezing-water therapy, and lobotomies. Here the mentally ill and not so mentally ill were "helped".

Even up to today, a little girl name Lilly wants you to come up to the fourth floor and play with her. Doing so would be a "grave" mistake.

The stuff of nightmares for sure. And it doesn't sound like it took much for some people to end up there ... but children :frown:

Mental illness has never been well supported, although in some respects things are getting better.

It's always good to be reminded of how far we have come.

My sister thought that we should go there after she saw it on Ghost Adventures or some such show. I told her it was too far out of our way.
