From "Merrie Old England" the traditional Christmas drink was "the Wassail Bowl". It was made with ale and cream boiled with cloves. A modern recipe is:
3 quarts cider
1 quart unsweetened pineapple juice
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 sticks cinnamon, broken
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
small pieces of lemon peel
crab apples, fresh or spiced
2 oranges
Combine all ingredients except crab apples and oranges. Bring to a boil; simmer 15 to 20 minutes. Strain into preheated punch bowl ( rinsed with hot water 0 and decorate with floating crab apples and orange wedges stuck with whole cloves. Serve hot in mugs or punch cups. Makes 4 quarts or 40 punch cups.
This is a wonderful drink for a Caroling Party.
