1839 Indian Tea became available to the British. They were only getting tea from China. With tea from India, tea became cheaper and affordable for all. It quickly became the National Drink.

1953 Otto Schnering died. He was founder of the Curtiss Candy Company in 1916. The company's first candy was named Kandy Kaka, renamed Baby Ruth in 1921.

1977 Ruth Wakefield died. She invented the Toll House Cookie in 1930s.

1984 Wendy's "Where's the beef" ad campaign began.

1770 Benjamin Franklin sent rhubarb seeds from London to his friend John Bartram in Philadelphia.

1838 John Molson died. Founder of Molson Brewing Co, Montreal, Canada in 1786. The oldest Brewery in North America.

1874 Gail Borden died. Inventor for process for making condensed milk.

1878 Milk first delivered to homes in glass bottle. This is in Brooklyn, N.Y.

2010 Dutch brewer Heineken acquired all of Femsa's Mexican beer operations, including Dos Equis, Sol and Tecate brand beers.

1833 Marie-Antoine Careme died in Paris. He was known "the cook of kings and the king of cooks".

1948 0pening of Britain's first super market at Manor Park.

1915 Rosenella Totino was born. She was the queen of frozen pizzas. She and her husband founded Totino's Pizzeria and Totino's Finer Foods.

1920 Prohibition began in U.S.

1945 Carl and Margaret Karcher opened Carl's Drive-in Barbeque in Anaheim, Ca.

1978 Helen Corbitt died. She was an American chef and cookbook author. She was known as "Tastemaker of the Century".

1818 George Palmer was born. He was a Biscuit manufacturer. His company, Huntley and Palmer introduced the first biscuit tins.

1907 John James McLaughlin of Ontario, Canada was awarded trademark for Canada Dry Ginger Ale, "the champagne of ginger ale".

2006 Craig Claiborne died He was author, food writer and editor and restaurant critic for the "New York Times".

1803 Arthur Guinness died. He was founder of Guinness Brewery.

1862 Agoston Haraszthy de Mokcsa brought 1400 varieties of grapevines to California. He planted them in first large vineyard in California.

1890 Cordelia Knott was born. Co-founder Knott Berry Farm.

1933 Ballerina Anna Pavlova died. Famous dessert names after her.

1977 Toots Shor died. He had famous restaurant in New York in 1940s and 1950's. Many celebrities dined there.

National Peanut Butter Day

1922 Patent for Eskimo Pie granted. Was issued to Christian Nelson of Onawa, Iowa.

1935 The beer can was introduced in Richmond, Virginia. It was by the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company.

1939 Maximilian Bircher-Benner died. He developed the cereal product, "Muesli". This is similar to Granola.

1950 P.L. Spencer received patent for the microwave oven.

1996 U.S. FDA approved the fat substitute Olestra.

1904 Ancel Keys was born, he developed the K ration used in World War II.

1923 "ARGO became registered trademark for corn starch by Corn Products Refining Co.

1932 William Wrigley Jr. died. Famous for Juicy Fruit gum in 1893 and Wrigley's Spearmint in 1894.
