    I am really enjoying Jimklag's thread "Today in Railroad History". So I am borrowing the idea, and starting "Today in Food History"' Thanks for the idea and all the information on railroading.

    November 6

    It is National Nachos Day.

    St. Leonard's Day, the patron saint of greengrocers.

    In 1914 on this date, Morton Salt first used "When it Rains It Pours", trademark for its salt.

    In 1976 David Marine died. He was an American pathologist whose research on the treatment of goiter with iodine led to the iodizing of table salt.

    In 1993 the world's largest peanut butter and jelly sandwich was created in Peanut, Pa. This was largest as to this date. It was almost 40 feet long and used 150 pounds of peanut butter and 5o pounds of jelly.

    1836 Charles Ranhofer was born. He was the chef for Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City from 1862 thru 1896.

    In 1965 on this date the Pillsbury Doughboy, "Poppin Fresh" was born. He made his debut in commercial for Crescent Rolls.

    1996 Distilled Spirits' Council of U.S. removed their voluntary ban of hard liquor ads on TV and radio. It had been in affect since 1936.

    On this day in 1721 Gurdon Saltonstall, Governour of the Colony of Connecticut proclaimed Nov. 8 as a day for a "Publick Thanksgiving".

    In 1789 on this date Elijah Craig distilled the first bourbon whiskey from corn in Bourbon County, Ky.

    In 1966 Gordon Ramsey was born in Scotland. he is famous chef, cookbook author and restaurateur and tv show host.

    In 1976 a US Canadian syndicate paid $235, 000 for Hanover Hill Barb, highest price paid for a cow. Must be some great beef.

    1801 Gail Borden was born. He was inventor of process for making condensed milk. Founder of the Condensed Milk Co., later renamed Borden Co.

    1891 George A. Hormel opened his packinghouse in Austin, Minnesota.

    It is also National Scrapple Day.

    1792 Dr. Jared Kirtland was born. He credited with developing 26 varieties of cherries and 6 varieties of pears.

    1918 Karen Hess was born She wrote several cookbooks. She also annotated Mary Randolph's "Virginia Housewife".

    In 1710 Charles Simon Favart was born in Paris. He was a famous pastry cook.

    !808 Johnann George Lehner, German butcher created a beef and pork sausage. Called "Frankfurter" in Austria and Weiner . In America known as the "hot dog".

    In 1895 on this day first shipment of canned pineapple left Hawaii.

    In 1930 the Rotolactor was developed by Walker-Gordon Dairy. It could milk over 1500 cows in 7 hours.

    In 1967 Clementine Paddleford died. She was American cookbook author and food columnist for several publications, including "NY Herald Tribune", "NY Sun", "Gourmet" and "This Week" magazines.

    1867 J.B. Sutherland received the first U.S. Patent for a refrigerated railroad car. It was an insulated double walled car with compartments for 800 pounds of ice at each end.

    1915 W.Atlee Burpee died. He started the world's largest mail order seed company in 1876.

    2002 Verne H. Winchell died. He was founder of Winchell's Donuts in 1948. He was known as "The Donut King".

    1660 Asser Levy from Portugal applied for license to sell kosher meat. He was first kosher butcher in New Amsterdam (New York).

    1849 First Poultry show held in Boston, Massachusetts. 1423 birds were exhibited.

    1969 The first color TV commercial in Britain was aired for Birdseye Peas.

    1969 Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburger restaurant in Columbus, Ohio.

    Today is National Raisin Brand Day.

    Today is National Clean Your Refrigerator Day.

    1923 Velveeta Cheese Co registered "Velveeta" trademark.

    1984 Sylvan Goldman died. He ran the chain of grocery stores called Piggly Wiggly. He invented the shopping cart.

    National French Toast Day

    1817 John Wesley Hyatt born. He invented a water purifying system and a sugar cane mill.

    1869 W. F. Semple of Mount Vernon, Ohio, was issued first chewing gum patent.

    2006 Texas Rep. state rep. Betty Brown filed a bill in the Texas legislature which declared Athens, Texas as the "original home of the hamburger". Some other areas strongly objected.

    Lemon is my favorite flavor for pie. I used to hate it but in the last few years I always choose lemon. I celebrated a day earlier yesterday by finishing up a lemon meringue pie. No one likes lemon but me so I had the whole pie to myself. :spin:
