I visited the Third Battle of Winchester Battlefield last weekend and was very impressed. Beautifully preserved and interpreted. Here are some photos.

Great photos as always! I had relatives there in Company K 53rd NC.

@White Flint Bill Great stuff. Glad to hear that the battlefield is "beautifully preserved and interpreted", as the opposite had been my previous impression. This is one battlefield I've got to get to before I croak!
Your impression is largely correct for the center of the battlefield where the Union Sixth Corps made its attack, but this area along Red Bud Run where Crook turned Gordon's flank has blissfully remained untouched, save for purposes of farming. The development has largely occurred along the highways leading into town from the north, east, and south, with spaces in between them like this still open. Here's a map of the preserved area, though by this time Hackwood and land right around it may have been added to the holding:

Lol when i was there the high school that is not pictured but in the lower right corner by the trailhead kiosk was running cross country practices through the trails. I was walking for history and they were out running.

Kinda jealous they get to run through history every practice.

Any idea how far this entire trail is if you walk it?

Far enough that Mike & I didn't want to walk the entire thing on a single very warm day! It's probably best-appreciated if broken into the recommended segments and approached from the two entrance gates. (Though the one by/behind the school is bit obscure to locate.)
