There has been a "North" and "South" since Colonial times

I am very much a student of history. When I was younger, I never much cared for it. Now in my mid-40's I find history to be the most fascinating subject of all! I've always thought of the "North" and "South" (as being disctinct culturally) arising just prior to the Civil War. I only recently realized that the "North" and "South" in America has always been a reality from before the Revolution, and back to the Colonial Era. I'd never thought of it that way before.

Now realizing how different culturally, economically, and politically the North and South were even prior to the Revolution - it's now clear that the Civil War was almost inevitable, and although that war ended 150 years ago, the reason why we still see a distinct "North" and "South" today is because there has always been a cultural divide between the two. I guess I just had an "A-ha!" moment and had to share and get other opinions.
