I feel it is common in discussion of the start of the war to claim that there was a widespread desire in the north to let the "erring sisters go" and that a reluctant country had to be pushed into action by the bombardment of Fort Sumter. I have also seen it written in discussion here that because of commercial or tariff reasons, the attitudes shifted from peace to war only in March 1861.

I dont doubt that there were some who held those attitudes. Yet I keep coming across items that suggest there was many ready and willing to go to war before these alleged triggers. I am interested in collecting statements showing how there was an impetus for war in the northern states from the very beginning of 1861. I welcome others to add items.
