The use of crossbows in 19th-century America?

Someone recently told to me that crossbows were sometimes used in the Appalachian region during the 18th and 19th centuries for hunting. That was news to me, and unfortunately the person didn't provide much detail apart from saying that they'd seen some old ones in The Museum of Appalachia.

Does anyone here know some details about the use of crossbows in 19th-century America? How common was it? What types were used and what parts of the country might you find them in? And, the big question, did any find their way into the Civil War?
