Interesting account.

In a way a more fitting end to these old war horses, can really say that way was better than being broken up.

Do you know what year that these ships catched fire and burned up.
Sir, other than going by the date of the article, that's as close as I can find. However, I'm beginning to wonder about the article itself. The Minnesota lasted until 1901 and was burned in Eastport, Maine and there are records of the South Carolina in merchant service in 1893.

Maybe ships of the same name? I get side tracked once a week, thinking a ship I'm looking for is the ship. Just found a steamer Canonicus!

Thought maybe the thread was about the ships burned at the beginning of the war, can't find more than the Harper's article. ( sorry, now off thread ).
