I came across this patent model for a projectile designed by T G Orwig and I have a few questions. Info is scarce on this. Was this for an artillery piece or musket? Is this the same TG Orwig who commanded the 1st Pennsylvanian artillery? Also, what other interesting items were in the R&D phase at the end of the CW.

U.S. Pat. No. 46,490 to Thomas G. Orwig discloses a small caliber projectile that includes a telescopic stem provided with wings wherein the stem elongates by its own inertia after the projectile leaves the muzzle of a barrel of the firing weapon increasing the range, velocity, and force, and also the certainty of striking the object fired at.

The Confederates had developed a spring loaded winged 3.5 "artillery projectile, but I don't think that it performed very well.

Sirs, would this have used some sort of Cup or Base Sabot?

Thanks!

Sort of seems like the inventor was trying to figure out a way to tube launch a Ketchum Grenade for greater range...maybe...?
