Jan. 2, 1863
The mayor of our city, Joseph Mayo, meeting two friends last night, whom he recognized but who did not recognize him, playfully seized one of them, a judge, and, garroter fashion, demanded his money or his life. The judge’s friend fell upon the mayor with a stick and beat him dreadfully before the joke was discovered.

Joseph Carrington Mayo - Mayor of Richmond: 1850-1865, 1866-1868
Was nearly 70 years old at the time - 1863

Was the Great Grandson of celebrated Colonial American surveyor Major William MAYO (1684-1744). In 1737, Major William Mayo laid out the city of Richmond, Virginia.

Uncle to Colonel Joseph C Mayo, Jr. - Pickett's charge at Gettysburg (3rd Virginia Infantry)

April 3, 1865 - Joseph C. Mayo, delivered the following message to the commander of the Union forces waiting to enter the Confederate capital: "The Army of the Confederate Government having abandoned the City of Richmond, I respectfully request that you will take possession of it with organized force, to preserve order and protect women and children and property."

Gen. Winfield Scott intermarried with the Mayo's (Marie Dehart Mayo, 2nd wife)

The Taylor-Mayo House, now known as the Mayo Memorial Church House, is the only surviving private residence in Richmond in the form of a Greek temple. In 1872, Peter H. Mayo, one of Richmond’s wealthiest citizens, bought the house. He was the owner of P.H. Mayo & Bros., who introduced cigarette manufacturing to Richmond. Having built the family tobacco fortune back up following the destruction of the Civil War, Mayo was in a position to purchase and leave his mark on what was already a fine building.
