The story comes from "Our Devoted Friend" and the article from one of a number of papers that picked the NY Times article up. I am unable to find anything on Leslie and Kaiser after they moved south, and while there was a Leslie Livermore in the 5th Infantry, with no further information, it would be pure speculation to say they were one and the same.
One would like to think that, as is said, they lived happily ever after.
Did she mistake it for an alarm clock? Maybe she needs a little dog friend with better hearing. (Ours have always enjoyed the companionship of other dogs.)

Totally different sound from my phone alarm clock. Shiloh hears perfectly. If she's in another room when I open a jar of peanut butter she comes a-running.
