"The night was as dark as a bag of black cats!"

The phrase was in use, though not common. Here's the start of an editorial in the Elyria (Oh.) Independent Democrat:

Black cats by the bag-full were also popular in other contexts.In 1891 we read:

"I tell you, sir, he is as crazy as a March hare." Spoken by General Ewell to a subordinate in reference to General "Stonewall" Jackson, during the 1862 Shenandoah campaign. However, hindsight tells us Jackson was actually crazy like a fox.
