Parson Brownlow waged a running battle with the Ku Klux Klan until his last days in office as governor of Tennessee. In 1869, his militia moved into Klan Kountry to combat the secret terrorist organization. As part of his war on the Klan, Brownlow hired Cincinnati detective Seymour Barmore to infiltrate the Pulaski Klavern, reputedly the first Klan organization in the country. After attending Klan meeting in Pulaski his identity was discovered. He was taken off a train in Columbia by two dozen Klansmen and his body was found on Feb. 20, 1869.

The Union Flag was a moderate paper published by a Union veteran from Tennessee.
