Formed in 1861 in St Louis during the tenure of Fremont as Commander of the Department of the West The Jessie Scouts were basically a Scout and Spy Company that
specialized in gathering intelligence dressed as Confederate troops. Named after Fremont's wife Jessie Benton Fremont were commanded by Charles C. Carpenter who had been in service as a Scout and Spy for Fremont prior to the formation of the scouts.

Capt. William McMichael said of Carpenter in a letter to U.S. Grant; "admirably adapted for the dangerous services in which he engages. During the times that General Fremont was in command, he several times performed such services as clearly indicated that he adds great shrewdness to the reckless courage which he undoubtedly possesses."

Jessie Scouts would go on to serve in the Western and Eastern Theaters of war as the war progressed, and would scout into Mexico after the war to gather intelligence on Confederate expat's there.

I think it's extremely interesting, @Borderruffian. I've never heard of this unit, but I will spend some concentrated time reading your links. Thanks for this thread!

Coming back just now to edit, I note this is a 2011 thread--that was three years before I first joined this site. No wonder I never saw this thread previously. I'll still be spending some time with your threads. Many thanks!
