The Fort Macon State Park is a state park in Carteret County, North Carolina. This structure is located on Bogue Banks near Atlantic Beach. Fort Macon State Park opened in 1936 and it is the second most visited state park in North Carolina. Fort Macon was built as part of the Third System of United States fortifications and it was preceded by Fort Hampton of the Second System. My wife and I just finished with our tour of Fort Macon. We both gave this park 4 1/2 cannon balls out of 5 cannon balls.

Excellent Photos. If by chance you get back there, could you photograph the 6-pdr, and it's trunnion and muzzle marks for me?
(and if you get a chance, grab it and bring it back home to Ohio :D.) That gun is an 1864 Greenwood, and was part of the 4th Battery ( out of 4 batteries) delivered to the Ohio National Guard in 1864. Her sister is on the State House Grounds in Columbus. Of the 11 survivors of those guns, that one is one of 2 that are no longer in Ohio. That is one I have not been able to visit yet.

Went many times as a kid. Just be real careful if you swim in the ocean near there... ruff water and many riptides.
Back in the early 80s I toured the fort with my family, when a youngster, and it proved unforgettable. I was wearing flip-flops, and going into the darkness of one of the rooms/casemates stepped in some human waste... After a good laugh by the family, I resolved no more flip-flops on my historical investigations!

Thanks, Bobby!

Naomi and I had this fort all to ourselves. The only disappointment was maintenance is re-staining the wood floors in the kiosk areas behind the doors marked with traffic cones. Oh well....

Weekday visit? Love doing that when I can.
