While doing some research I found the following ad in the Liberty Advocate (Amite County, Mississippi), December 22, 1866:
The "List of Contributions" Mr. Dixon was so anxious to recover were to be used to build a memorial to Amite County's Confederate dead. Fund raising for the monument started in 1866, and it was dedicated in 1871. Here is a picture of the monument as it looks today:
