the English. A name given by the Amish religious sect to all Americans who were not Amish. They considered the Civil War to be an English war that did not concern their people. The peace-loving Amish would not fight on either side or even resist when foragers stole or appropriated their food and equipment. Their humble life today without modern conveniences is still a mirror of the Amish communities during the war.
