I can picture Lincoln stopping just short of saying, "He followed me home. Can I keep him?" in this story from the June/July 2003 issue of American Heritage magazine. Actually, he did more or less ask it on his sons' behalf. Cynthia Owen Philip is the author of this engaging story of "Lincoln's Doctor's Dog."

(Not Dr. Suckley's dog, but an era pointer at work. From "The Pointer and His
Predecessors: an Illustrated History of the Pointing Dog From the Earliest Times,"

by William Arkwright, published 1902.)
