One wonders about priorities. Ships, armaments and experienced crews. Among the chaos and shortages, someone found the time to order dishware.

Cup and saucer of white ironstone; both pieces are trimmed in blue and have the Confederate Navy seal. Made by E. F. Bodley and Company.
The cup and saucer came from the set of Confederate States Navy China made for the CSS Florida. Commander John Newland Maffitt used these pieces while he was commander of the cruiser during 1862-1863. In 1866, he gave these articles to be raffled off to raise funds to erect a monument in his honor. The women of Florida had gathered in Tallahassee to hold a fair to fundraise for this monument. Mrs. Eppes, the donor, won them in that raffle.
Other Confederate Naval vessels also had their own dishware.
