I was in North Carolina last week and visited the small town (pop. 85) of Seven Springs near Goldsboro to check out the site (in a cornfield) where the CSS Neuse was built.

The Battle of White Hall also took place there in Dec. 1862 and was part of Foster's Raid from New Bern to Goldsboro. At the time, Union artillery damaged the ironclad which was under construction.

While driving around to battle sites, we drove past the playground and saw a small scale model of the CSS Neuse in use as a sort of a playhouse. It had the sides painted gray and an iron pipe sticking out of the front as a cannon.

Does anyone know of any playgrounds anywhere else that feature a Civil War-era warship?

Interesting.
Seen "pirate" ships before, but an ironclad?

Wonder how long it's been there. Certainly different.

Three Neuses

Counting the playground Neuse that would make three.

What is left of the hull of the real CSS Neuse is in Kinston. Nearby is a scale replica of it.

There's also a half scale model of the ALBERMARLE in Plymouth NC, and a local reenactment unit will sometimes take it out on the river for a spin. Last time I saw it, it was docked downtown on the river.
