The Battle of Brice's Crossroads was fought on this day in 1864, near Baldwyn, Mississippi, during the American Civil War. Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a 4,787-man contingent against an 8,100-strong Federal force led by Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis. The battle ended in a rout of the Federal forces and cemented Forrest's reputation as one of the great cavalrymen in the war. Forrest earned the nickname "Wizard of the Saddle."

The return of the yanks to their base at Memphis was said to be much faster than their march south. Forrest was nipping at their heels!

"Their cavalry will move out ahead of their infantry and should reach the crossroads three hours in advance. We can whip their cavalry in that time. As soon as the fight opens, they will send back to have the infantry hurried up. It is going to be hot as h[***], and coming on a run for five or six miles, their infantry will be so tired out we will ride right over them."

I tried to visit here this year, but after Fort Donelson and Shiloh in the past couple of days, the Corinth Interpretive Center and Mississippi's Last Stands museum that morning, and wanting to make it to Vicksburg that day, I was only willing to drive my RV in to see the monument. I was exhausted, and couldn't really find any places to park the rig and explore. It's times like that I wish I had a small vehicle better than a bicycle.

Visited here back in April 2022 (humid and sweltering even then) and really enjoyed the site. They had a couple really nice walking trails.
