The Battle of Fort Stedman (Battle of Hare's Hill) was fought on March 25, 1865, during the final days of the American Civil War. This Federal Army fortification in the siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia, was attacked in a pre-dawn Confederate assault by troops led by Major General John B. Gordon. The attack was the last serious attempt by Confederate troops to break the Siege of Petersburg. After an initial success, Gordon's men were driven back by Federal troops of the IX Corps commanded by Major General John G. Parke.

Bumping for the anniversary
Gordon was to my mind the best successor of Stonewall Jackson. He showed here and on to the final days of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox, that he could perform wonders with his horrifically depleted command. It's too bad that, by the time he reached higher command, it was too late for his actions to help turn the tide.

Fort Stedman was named after Col. Griffin A. Stedman. He was killed at Petersburg on 8/5/1864 and posthumously breveted to Brig. General. He was a native of Hartford,CT. There is a statue of him in Hartford. Pictures taken on 6/23/2017.
