Not many folks may realize that the wall to the right of the tree, which ran perpendicular to the ridge, was occupied by the 71st Pennsylvania for most of the day on July 2, until the threat of attack from the west in the late afternoon compelled the regiment to realign behind Battery A, 4th U.S., facing west. The initial deployment of the Second Corps very early on July 2 suggested a concern that an attack would be launched from the north, from the direction of town.
