During the Shiloh Muster, James N. and I and were walking along a trail and he noticed the monument of the 13th Missouri was an Ohio style and had the 22nd Ohio listed as well. We discussed this conundrum but could not arrive at a solution. As I walked away I decided to see if I could find out why the name and state origin change.
The 13th Missouri was organized in November of 1861 near St. Louis as a 3 year regiment. The 13th served at the capture of Fort Henry, at Fort Donalson, though not engaged in combat, Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth but on July 7th, 1862 they became the 22nd Ohio by order of Secretary of War Stanton. The regiment’s officers and men were mostly from Ohio and evidently they must have initiated the process of being transferred. The original 22nd Ohio was a 3 month service regiment and the unit designation was available. I have come to the conclusion the monument was an Ohio design as the regiment had fought as the 22nd after the summer of 1862 and spent more time under that name. If this is incorrect I certainly hope someone more knowledgeable will make the necessary changes.
Here is the official order:
Headquarters State of Missouri, Adjutant-General's Office, { St. Louis. June 17, 1862. } Special Orders, No. 80.
\
In accordance with General Orders, No. 18, current series, from the War Department, and instructions from the adjutant-general's office at Washington, the regiment of infantry known heretofore as the Thirteenth Missouri Volunteers is hereby transferred to the State of Ohio. By order of commander-in-chief.
William D. Wood, Acting Adjutant- General.
