My first visit to Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC for the holidays.
To the left of the ferry in the middle of the photo on the horizon you get just see the outline of Fort Sumter.
This is the original first Confederate flag to fly at Fort Sumter. It is a 1st National Confederate flag with 7 white stars. Hand sewn.
Located in downtown Charleston is the old City Market. The upstairs portion is now used as a Confederate museum. It is run by the U.D.C. of Charleston.
It is well worth the visit. Only $5.00 to self tour it. LOTS of great Charleston and Fort Sumter history here.
According to the description in the Confederate Museum, this cannon is probably the first rifled cannon made in the United States, but certainly the first made in the Confederate States. It is seven feet long, eighteen pounder, and weighs in at one thousand pounds. Made by Archibald Cameron in 1861 out of "Low Moor" iron. This gun served on the coast before being moved to Columbia. It was captured by Sherman's forces later in the war.
A peek at the inside of the Confederate Museum. Filled to the brim with Confederate history.
Here's a portion of original cedar log from the boyhood log cabin home of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
South Carolina coast sunset. Much more peaceful now than it was in April 1861 when the country was split in two by civil war.
