Sword expert

Nope but I do know one in Alabama

There is plenty of opinion here, some quite qualified. If not ACW related, there are plenty of boards for more specialized research and identifications.

Cheers

The Wheaton Civil War Show is at the end of the month. If you haven't gotten in touch with someone by then I'm sure you will find plenty of qualified experts there.

Cheers,
Garrett

Curious to know your sword progress at Wheaton ? What was it.
Well the experts ( two ) said it is an authentic CSN Cutlass, but weren't sure
if it is Thomas Griswold or Richmond made. It has the eagle on both sides of the pommel and the three indentations where rivets would be on a Union version, which often are considered Griswold features, but is otherwise unsigned. Thanks for your interest.

First of all, Congrats on the CSN cutlass.
Please have a long, hard, magnifying glass look at the center indentations in the hilt where the 3 rivet were when the sand mould was made. You're looking for round rust spots on both sides of the otherwise brass hilt. Some of these cutlasses had a single iron pin through the hilt. {Virginia made}

Ok, I did look with a magnifying glass, but couldn't distinguish any telltale rust marks from the natural reddish brass patina of the grip itself. Must be the copper content in the brass. Thanks! Jonl51
