BOSTON — A sword has broken off again from a memorial depicting the famed 54th Massachusetts Civil War regiment, featured in the Denzel Washington movie "Glory."

Boston police are investigating after the damage was reported Tuesday. They suspect vandalism.

I saw it in the 1990's fairly soon after it's restoration to be used as the backdrop for the credit roll in Glory. I came upon it while walking Boston's Freedom Trail and took these two photos. As you can see, there are others who love it and leave flowers; note also the bouquet lying at the horse's feet. I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to bend or break off the blade of Shaw's sword and am glad to hear foresight has been made so it can be repaired!
